Tiago, Isabel, Linares, and the others, are having dinner at Captain Tiago's house.  Sinang whispers to Maria Clara, who is seated by the piano and had refused to eat.  Friar Salvi is pacing back and forth across the living room.  Ibarra hears shots fired near the convent.  He rushes toward Captain Tiago's house.  When Ibarra returns to his house, the civil guards arrest him.  Elias then enters the empty quarters and burns all the evidence that could implicated Ibarra in the failed rebellion.

Points of Note:
Sinang and Maria Clara's other friends are aware of Friar Salvi's affections for the young maiden.

The moon does not shine too brightly that night.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Question: Why is Friar Salvi staying at Captain Tiago's house when he knows there will be an attack at the convent?
Answer: The priest is accustomed to having dinner in the homes of his parishioners. He may also want to keep an eye on Maria Clara, who he knows will be visited by Ibarra in this time of turmoil.

Question: Why doesn't Ibarra burn Maria Clara's picture with the rest of Ibarra's possessions?
Answer: Elias feels that it would not have been Ibarra's intention to burn the portrait.  And Elias has had great respect and admiration for the young lady ever since she paid him the kindest regard during the picnic by the lake.
